Ballroom Dancing by definition a man and a woman moving as one. Moving with an awareness and presence that personifies such qualities as grace, elegance, expression, skill, artistry, and of course, athleticism. Physical properties of endurance, flexibility, strength, speed and agility are the required companions of this art. -- Frank Regan 1994 |

DanceSport is the new term for competitive Ballroom Dancing. It can be viewed as a combination of technical ability and elegance which results in a performance. Many people associate Ballroom Dance with only Ballroom (Standard) style dances (i.e. Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, & Quickstep), thus the more encompassing and appealing name, DanceSport, was adopted. DanceSport encompasses both Standard dances as well as Latin dances, and has been recognized by the Olympic Commitee as an offical sport. Listed below are the different styles of dance found in DanceSport.
