The NMSU DanceSport Team
is an athletic and performance social dance team in the
NMSU Department of Physical Education, Recreation, and
Dance. Students and faculty members willing to take
social dancing to the next level formed the DanceSport
Team in the Fall of 1999. The team helps to enrich the
knowledge of dance within the NMSU and Las Cruces
communities. The DanceSport Team is structured to
provide instruction on a variety of dances ranging from
Latin: Cha-Cha, Rumba, Samba, etc. to Ballroom: Waltz,
Tango, Foxtrot, including others such as various forms
of Swing: East Coast (Triple) Swing, West Coast Swing,
Lindy, etc. All of the dancing done is couple dancing.
Through the generation of the DanceSport Team, the
amount of interest in social dancing among students has
increased. The team consists of both graduate and
undergraduate students with majors ranging from
Engineering to Business to Dance. The team performs
regularly for different events in and around the Las
Cruces area.
The DanceSport Team has traveled to several
collegiate competitions over the years; some of
which include "Dance By the Shores" at the
University of California San Diego, "Desert
Challenge" at the University of Nevada Las
Vegas, and "Cardinal Classic" at Stanford
Univeristy. At these competitions the team has
successfully competed in both team formation and
couple dancing.
